SAMPLE LETTER TO YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENATIVES

Dear Senator/Representative ________:

My name is  __________ and I want you to co-sponsor the Medical Foods Equity Act. 

For Senate letters:  The current Senate bill number is S.2766.  I live in City Name, State and have a child, (insert name and age), who has PKU.  I need you to co-sponsor this bill to ensure he/she has the access and coverage they need to treat this disorder.

For House of Represenatives letters:  Rep. Tammy Baldwin has agreed to Champion this legislation in the House of Representatives and is looking for original co-sponsors for the bill.  The companion Senate bill number is S.2766.

While the federal government guarantees that PKU is screened for at birth, there is no federal mandate to provide treatment.  In order to remain healthy, (name of child), must drink a medical formula every day for the rest of their lives and eat special low-protein foods.  The Medical Foods Equity Act is based on recommendations of the HHS Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children and would require that all insurers provide coverage to treat the disorder.  Please take a leadership role in this important issue by co-sponsoring the Medical Foods Equity Act.
